SPECIAL RESEARCH
PROJECT
Transitional Ministries is
presently conducting research for a new book on the subject
of the dangers faced when a long term pastor (20+
years) leaves office.
We invite any pastor or
congregation who has experienced such a transition of
leadership to contact Transitional Ministries to participate
in this research project. All participants will be
kept in strict confidence. Whether your experience has been
good, or unpleasant, others can learn from your church's
experience.
The purpose of this research is
to identify those activities, that both pastors and
congregations have experienced, that have helped to make a
smooth transition, or what has resulted in unhealthy
behavior that has hindered the development of the church.
We welcome former long term
pastors who what left office, church lay leadership who have
experienced such a transition and pastors who have followed
long term pastors to participate in this research project.

This book will focus on three
primary areas of impact.
-
First on
the affects such a change will have on the pastor who is
leaving office. We will be taking a frank
and honest look at what most pastors will face in the
transition period following his or her leaving office.
What to avoid and how to prepare both the congregation and
one's self for the change.
-
Second we
will examine the impact such a change in leadership may have
upon the congregation. We will discuss such
issues as: How to honor the outgoing pastor and still honor
the new leadership - including what to do and what not to do
during the interim before the new leadership arrives.
How to deal with the pain many will face over the loss
of their beloved pastor. How to manage the predictable
power surges to influence the new pastor - and much more.
-
The third
area of focus will be on the role the new incoming pastor
can expect in the transition. Attention
will be given to how to evaluate the role the former pastor
may continue to play in the congregation, and the role
the congregation expects the former pastor to play in the
future. We will examine how one may esteem the former
long term pastor and, at the same time, establish his or her
new position of leadership. Further we will touch on
the importance of establishing a clear understanding with
the new congregation as to the incoming pastors style and
form of administration.
All participating
churches
will receive a
complementary copy of the published book.
